The kinders have been very responsible with their take-home readers! They all are excited to get a "new" book each day, they are more than willing to sit with Mrs. Betros or myself and read, and we have seen most of the books returned the following day. The look on a kinder's face when s/he has figured out a word using the picture, sounding out, or just guessing IS priceless. Thank you for helping your kinder begin the routine!
In addition to beginning the reading process, we have taken risks to sound out words for activities in class. Many are surprised that some words are only 2 or 3 letters long. We hear, "What? That's it?" We respond with, "Yep, you got it, you rock!" In kindergarten, we focus on the sounds that are heard. Many times, vowels (a, e, i, o, u, y) are omitted, which is completely fine, and they are only hearing parts of the word. This is developmental and all kinders need to go through this process to become a confident and successful reader and writer! Each kinder has given his/her most effort in this process and we are really excited!
Questions have developed over Treasure Box. This is usually done on Friday, after our last recess, and is provided for those students who have stayed on green or lime (still green) for the last week (5 days). Occasionally, a surprise treasure box will appear on any of the other days. Our class has been doing such a great job at recognizing themselves/their peers exhibiting ROAR characteristics. We earned the top gold star in 3 specials classes this week for a total of 15 jewels to put in our class jar. As soon as our jar is full (which won't be long) we will vote as a class for our reward. (Some have expressed their desire for Dunkin' Donuts!)
Enjoying your kinders...hope you have a super week!
