Happy New Year, 2010!

Thank you to all the parents who helped make our holiday party a big success. The kinders had a fantastic time and we all appreciated the time and effort put into the party. It was a lot of fun! We hope everyone had a relaxing holiday break and are ready to begin the new year! This is definitely the time when the kinders really excel.

We are focusing on solid shapes (sphere, cone, cylinder, cube) this week while reviewing the plane shapes (circle, square...). The kinders have been doing a great job creating 3-D solids with toothpicks and play dough! We will discover which solid shapes will roll, stack and slide, in addition to discovering new words like "edge" for a shape.

Please help your kinder to remember his/her boots if s/he wants to play out in the snow on the playground. It is a school rule that boots are worn so shoes, socks & pants don't become soaked. If they do not have boots, kinders play on the blacktop or sidewalks.

Have a great week!

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

How we love Colorado weather! Please help to remind your kinder to bring a hat and gloves, marked with their name, to school. We were stuck inside today, but as soon as that temperature reaches 15 degrees, I am on a mission to bundle up and get some fresh air. It does wonders for the brain!

Last week we studied our 5 senses. We learned a song about the senses...have your kinder sing it for you...and added activities to reinforce the concepts. The kinders did a fantastic job!

Our holiday/winter party is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 18th from 11:50-12:50. We are having it again in the morning since we have the all-school sing along in the afternoon. We welcome you to the party, but the sing along is just for students and teachers as we will get all 600 plus of us in the gym.

Thank you to all of the parents who have taken time to help our classroom by providing extra snacks and baby wipes. We are grateful! As you clean out drawers/closets/playrooms, etc. we are always looking for treasure box items. Your junk is definitely our treasure...we'd be happy to take it off your hands.

I am looking forward to the next two weeks and the kinders' excitement over the holiday. Everyone has so much to share and it is such a wonderful time to be involved with 5 & 6 year olds! We'll be busy like the elves, so send them rested! Thanks! :)

Gobble, Gobble!

Many families will be leaving early to begin their Thanksgiving holiday. If you will not be here Monday and Tuesday prior to our break, please let me know so that I can plan accordingly.

We plan to have our Kindergarten Thanksgiving Feast on Tuesday, Nov. 24th. We will be celebrating with 4 of the kindergarten classes. A note will be coming home this week to inform you about the item your kinder needs to bring to share with the classes. Thank you, in advance, for helping us with this!

Last week we studied Native Americans. We discovered the kind of homes they lived in, how they were named, different regions they occupied and many interesting facts. See what your kinder can tell you. This week we're moving right along into the study of North America, the Mayflower, the Pilgrims and a little bit of turkey talk at the end of the week into next week. There is never a dull moment...especially during our conversations after lunch!

Our class is in need of a few donations. We are running short on emergency snacks (for those of us who forget) and on baby wet wipes. If you are interested in donating animal crackers, pretzels, etc. or baby wipes, please send them in with your kinder. We appreciate it!

New volunteer forms will be coming home after the Thanksgiving break to allow parents to
update their volunteer times/days. Andrea Boncore-Campbell will be putting the new volunteer schedule together for the remainder of the year. This is a good time to sign up if you haven't and to also note changes that have occurred so that we can accommodate those. Thank you for taking time to fill this out again!

There will not be homework or readers sent home next week as it is a shortened week! Enjoy!

Have a great week and a super Thanksgiving with your family!

November!

Thank you to each and every parent who helped make our class Halloween Party such a success. The kinders enjoyed all of the food, activities and fun. They were exhausted by mid-day...it's amazing what 2 snow days will do to you!

Due to our snow days, the specials schedule did not remain the same as was posted on the blog. Last Wednesday, we should have had library, but because of our 2 days off, library rolled onto Friday. Thank goodness parents don't have to master this process in kindergarten! You have 5 more years of elementary to put it to memory! :)

Thank you to Rachel LeValley for taking pictures of kinders during the Halloween Party and for volunteering to coordinate our class page in the yearbook!

We have been playing with magnets this week and have learned about attract and repel. The kinders have become fabulous scientists discovering that opposite poles attract and like poles repel. They love this part of the day, as do I, when they soak up all the information like sponges!

Enjoy the weather!

Happy Halloween!

It is obvious the kinders are getting excited for Halloween. They have been working on "BOO BAGS" for each other & drawing pictures of their costumes during free centers. Our classroom has been just a little bit louder (with excitement, of course).

Our party will be this Friday from 12-1. Please join us if you have time in your day. The all-school parade will begin at 2:15. The classes will travel through the school. A great place to watch is in the gym. See you there!

Thank you for sending in pumpkins for your kinder to work with last week. We had a fun time finding the circumference of each pumpkin, comparing height, longest stem, greatest number of seeds and discovering that pumpkins FLOAT! We tried to squeeze in a pumpkin race or two as well! It was a memorable time!

Enjoy the warmth...at least for now and we look forward to seeing you on Friday!

Exploring with Christopher Columbus

This week we learned about Christopher Columbus, reviewed the compass rose and the seven continents. Kinders worked together this afternoon, (Wednesday) to compete for points in a healthy game of Kindergarten Jeopardy. We have a great group of kinders who listened really well about Columbus this week!

In math, we are patterning like crazy. I bet your kinder can show you a difficult pattern...more than just an ABABABAB pattern. These kinders are amazing!

We will not have literacy groups next Thursday as Mrs. Irving, our librarian, has scheduled our class to visit with an author. If you are scheduled for Oct. 22nd, please enjoy that time to yourself! :)

Calling for a volunteer! Is that you? The yearbook coordinator for Zach is in need of a volunteer from our classroom to put our class page together. I have been told that this would be a fairly easy job, so if you're interested in helping, please let me know and I will pass on the contact information to you. Thanks!

Alison Biggs and Terese Shanley are coordinating the Halloween Party which will happen on Friday, October 30th from 12-1. All parents and younger siblings are invited with the understanding that crafts, treats, etc. will only be planned for the number of students in our class.

Have a super 4-day weekend with your kinder!
